Research Interests
My primary research interests are human computer interaction, social computing, and cognitive science.
Work Experience
For the past 15 years, I've been a cognitive and computer scientist at the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International where I work with multidisciplinary teams to design, develop, and test learning technology. (See example projects.) I've been a principle investigator for 9 NSF grants and authored/coauthored several publications on topics including online community, collaborative technology, learning, and reasoning.
In graduate school I was a teaching assistant for courses in cognitive science and programming, and interned/consulted at Apple, IBM, and Xerox PARC, working in the areas of interface design, artificial intelligence, and user studies.
Education
I have a Ph.D. in cognition and learning and an M.S. in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley. My dissertation work focused on modeling and aiding scientific reasoning through an integration of theory-based cognitive simulations, experimental studies, and instructional curricula. I have a B.S. from the University of Nebraska in mathematics and computer science.
Fun
My hobbies and other interests include a cappella singing, social dance, long-term thinking (on global warming, evolution, etc.), personal finance, and conservation.
